about me

where am i?

You have arrived at my personal blog. Welcome! 5 arbitrary categories separate the blog: fun, books, me, work, and photos. The “fun” category contains posts related to my hobbies and what brings joy into my life. “me” has all of my reflections and life commentary. “books” is where my posts on books go—not in the format of a book review. Any programming and “technical” related posts go in “work”. Lastly, “photos” stores posts with a central media piece and a commentary about it.

As a personal blog made to explore and write on my interests, there isn’t a centralizing force other than the categories1.

who are you?

The blog logo, u高, is my first and last name (you gao). here is my aboutme.txt from my main site. Get to know me more through my writing and feel free to reach out at hello@yougao.dev!

my shadow box

why are you writing?

I started this blog as a tool to reflect on the ideas I have and come in contact with. It has since morphed to include personal reflections, celebrations of life, and artistic work2. The central goal of my writing is to gain insight—not simply factoids, except sometimes—on the topic under investigation.

I approach writing the posts as a blank slate, meaning I’ll have little sense of what I’ll be exploring. In many cases, this writing method leads to unparsable/unreadable texts, so I apologize in advance. My dream scenario is if you, the reader, can take anything useful from the blog.

should you blog?

  1. I plan on trying tags for visualization and grouping in my archive

  2. I specifically made the photos tab in anticipation of getting my film developed. It has turned into meme/media sharing, which isn’t the worst alternative use case.
